King Lear Essays (286 words) - British Films, Films,

King Lear In the King Lear play, Shakespeare creates many conditions in which humans live in the world. The main characters in the play are used to portray Shakespeare's ideas. One of these ideas which Shakespeare is trying to portray is evil between the characters and in the world which are emphasized throughout the play. The evil, created by humans, is outweighed by good in the world of King Lear. Evil was created by humans who decided to do wrong to others. Duke of Albany, said that all evil people will be justly punished (ACT V, iii, 303). Albany indicated that it is the people who caused evil and people decided to do evil, not gods. Lear believes that since Edgar is out on the heath he must have given everything to his daughters as well (ACT III, iv, 62ff). Since he believes that Edgar gave everything to evil Lear must believe that people are the cause of evil. It were Lear's daughters who decided to do wrong to Lear and it was Lear's fault in giving away all of his land. Si ughters are the humans in the play, it is the humans who caused the evil and Lear believes that humans were the ones who created evil. Edgar, is another character in the play who believes that evil is caused by humans and not the gods. Edgar said, "The gods are just, and of our peasant vices make instruments to plague us" (ACT V, iii, 169). Edgar clearly says that the gods are right and it is the people who are responsible for promoting evil in the world. It is us who make the instruments necessary for evil to spread and plague the world. In the world of King Lear many characters believe evil was caused by the people and not by the gods.

Martin Brian Mulroney Essays - Brian Mulroney, Free Essays

Martin Brian Mulroney Essays - Brian Mulroney, Free Essays Martin Brian Mulroney Martin Brian Mulroney became the 18th prime minister of Canada on September 17, 1984, after his party, the Progressive Conservatives won the greatest parliamentary victory ever in Canadian history. Mulroney was born in 1939, the son of an electrician, in the paper mill town of Baie Comeau, Quebec. Mulroney attended a very strict military type all boys school until the age of 16 when he entered Saint Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. There he earned an honor degree in political science. While at St. FX he was active in on campus politics. During his first year he became a member of the youth wing of the P.C. Party of Nova Scotia. Before he graduated he was to become the Prime Minister of St. FXs famous mock Parliament, a position that had been held for years by Liberal students. After graduation he studied law at Dalhousie in Halifax and later at Laval University in Quebec, from which he graduated in 1962. It was during these years in Quebec that Mulroney became known as the life of the party. He frequented most Montreal nightclubs and was quite a ladys man. Mulroney also became a slightly more than social drinker. After becoming a lawyer in 1965 he joined a prestigious law firm known as Cate Ogilvy, later becoming a partner in that firm. In May 1973 at the age of 34 he married a beautiful 20 year old Mila Pivnicki, daughter of Yugoslav immigrants. The Mulroneys would go on to have three children. Mulroney worked energetically for the Progressive Conservative Party as a young lawyer, serving on the party's finance and policy committees and on its 1968 and 1972 campaign committees. He first came into the public eye in 1974 as a member of the Cliche Royal Commission, which investigated corruption and violence in the Quebec construction industry. Also involved in this commission was Mulroneys friend and future Quebec premier Lucien Bouchard. Although Mulroney had not yet held public office, he ran for election as Conservative leader at the party's 1976 national convention. He waged a vigorous and expensive campaign but lost to Joe Clark after being critisized as the Cadillac Cantidate for spending so much money. Following this failure, Mulroney became very depressed and bitter. This was a very bleak time in his life. His drinking and his tongue often got him in trouble. During this period he would often attend social events, get very drunk, and make an ass of himself. He took the Leadership loss very personally and it almost ruined him. A few years after taking the job of President of the Iron Ore Company of Canada in 1977 he decided that he would clean himself up. He went to special Alcoholics Anonomous meetings for famous people who didnt want the world to know they had a problem. After this time in his life he almost never had a drink and never repeated his drunken outbursts at any social functions. During his years a s a corporate executive, Mulroney remained active in politics, taking every occasion to increase his visibility among the public and to gain support from within the party for his upcoming leadership bid. In 1982, because of an economic depression, the Iron Ore Company of Canada was forced to close one of its mining and milling towns in Quebec. At first this appeared to be a disastrous political setback for Mulroney. However, he turned it into a public relations triumph by making the people of the town in question believe that there were other alternatives when there were none and by negotiating generous settlements for the workers who had lost their jobs. This earned him respect and won him general support and his reputation as an expert labor lawyer and industrial relations specialist was enhanced. After the election most of his promises were shown to be false hopes but by that time the people had already decided. In mid-1983 Clark's leadership of the Progressive Conservative Party was being questioned, forcing him to call a national party convention and leadership review. Brian Mulroney was again a candidate, and he campaigned more shrewdly than he had done seven years before. He actually had been paying people to ruin Clarks chances

American History reconstruction Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

American History reconstruction - Essay Example The next mentionable event in the Reconstruction era was the Wade-Davis Bill in 1864. Republican dominated Congress passed it declaring that Southern States should be run by military governors and Secession and Slavery would be outlawed with the consent of the fifty percent of a state’s voters. Congress passed the 13th Amendment and established the Freedmen’s Bureau in order to provide the formers slaves and black communities with the opportunities of education, employment, medical service, and economic facilities. Indeed the Republican dominated Congress’s attempts complementary ones to a great extent, though they were more stringent and punitive than Lincoln. Reconstruction under Johnson’s Presidency took the same course that Lincoln started. But President Johnson’s lack of foresight made Reconstruction less effective. Consequently the Congress passed the 14th Amendment in order to protect Black people’s civil right and full citizenship in 1866 and the 15th Amendment in order to give constitutional protection to black suffrage in 1870. But along the passage of time, the reconstruction zeal began to wane.

Who Owns History The Texas Textbook Controversy Essay - 1

Who Owns History The Texas Textbook Controversy - Essay Example The question on how history should be taught was brought to the limelight by the state of Texas. The Texas State Board of Education, in charge of the state’s curriculum, approved several controversial changes to be made to the textbooks in schools. The changes were included in the economic, social studies and history textbooks. These ‘improvements’ made by the education board emphasizes the Christianitys influence in the founding of America (Hutchins et. al. 652). The changes downplay the role of liberals and highlight the influence of conservative groups in American history. These changes, for the Texan board, seem minimal with no consequences on the American history, but the opposite is true. These small changes and tweaks in their curriculum seek to re-write the American history significantly for the students in Texas. Furthermore, the state of Texas is among the country’s biggest purchasers of History textbooks. This means that the changes in the Texan curriculum will slowly reflect in all schools throughout the country. They exclude the influence and existence of Thomas Jefferson, one of the country’s founding fathers. The Texan board excludes his influence on the Declaration of Independence and other vital legislation (Hutchins et. al. 653). Jefferson is not the only culprit of the Texan board; they further scrap off presidential runs of Ralph Nader and Ross Perot in their history books. There is a complete exclusion of the roles of Latinos and other races in America History. The changes implemented in the Texan History textbooks are endless, but it is heavily characterized by the conservative Christian influences. By changing and rewriting history of the state of Texas, the Texan board rewrote the world’s history. These changes made by the Texan board question the legitimacy of history and the appropriate way of teaching the subject. It is a universally accepted

Terrorism - Essay Example ook place at a railway station in Kunming where it is reported that a group of assailants emerged and started attacking passengers at random with swords and knifes regardless of age. Such incidences of random attacks have been on the rise in various regions of the world and this is regarded terrorism. However, police showed up and neutralized the threat where 4 assailants were killed and one apprehended. Reports came later on that the rest of the assailants were arrested moments after the attack. It is believed that the attacks were as a result of the group’s inability to leave the country. After several attempts to leave, the group grew desperate hence the attacks on innocent civilians. Motives of departure are quite unclear since some claim it was to participate in jihad activities while others claim the group was running from fears of being arrested by police. Nevertheless, whatever the reason there is no moral justification for attacking innocent civilians and this should be regarded an act of terrorism and those responsible ought to face the law. Terrorism has quite received significantly many definitions with scholars across the world debating on the real meaning of terrorism. The sparked confusion can arguably be attributed to the fact that even those responsible for committing attacks do not consider their actions acts of terror. Furthermore, increased rise of significantly many groups linked with violent attacks has sparked further confusion as to what ingredients really constitute terrorism. For instance in the modern day there has been increased rise of rebellions in different parts of the world most of whom use violence to pass their messages. As a result there is really a thin line between terrorism and rebellions and times the term terrorism is used to refer to violent rebellions. However, it is almost obvious that whenever the term is used it refers to attacks on innocent civilians regardless of the justifications given by the perpetrators. The

MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM The Banking sector is pretty much used to the concept and implementation of Management Information System since decades. Earlier during the start of 1980s the term MIS was used for the mainly making reports and to analyze the data.. This was then send to Top management, and decision were taken by them accordingly. Management of Information system is really benefitial during taking decisions and is a collected result of both- Data mining and Data Warehousing. Refer figure 2 for benefits of MIS. INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY ARCHITECTURE: Hub And Spoke Architecture The head quarter of HDFC is located in Mumbai. It has a network based IP which is centralized and the branches are spread across the nation and is connected to the main data centre at Chandvilli in Mumbai. Maharashtra. Network: A regional hub is defined such that the branches are categorized under different regions each having its regional hub. At the main region, the different branches coming under a single location are connected to the hub. These are then further connected to the central data centre using pipes having bandwidth of either 2 Mbps or 64 Kbps. There are two hubs instead of one. In a matter of years to come, HDFC Bank has decided to put connections with the feature of built-in redundancy in the network itself. Like, Madras could be connected to Bangalore and Kolkata, with all three of them being connected to Chandivili. Therefore, if the Kolkata-Chandivili link fails, then Kolkata will use the Madras link to connect to the Chandivili data center. VSAT solutions is used for networking. Servers The bank uses SCO Unix and MicroBanker from i-flex solution. With an increase on number of Banks branches, it became necessary to consider Unix/RISC operating systems instead of an Intel Unix platform, and thus the bank selected the Sun platform. Presently the bank is running its application on a Sun platform. As there was a rise in the volume of transactions, the total number of branches as well as the number of users has resulted in up-gradation of the hardware platform also. The database used is DAS and network SAN. Banking applications The software used by the bank for corporate and retail banking are different. The reason for this is that there was no package which could cater to both the domains. For the corporate sector HDFC Bank used MicroBanker after Flexcube. The Flexcube UBS uses a Compaq Alpha box-GS160. It also uses SAN solutions from Hitachi Data Systems. For the retail sector, the bank uses an offering from i-flex solutions : Finware. There were no issues faced by the bank regarding migration as the products they used were easily upgradeable and were usually supplied by the same set of vendors. The vendors also ensured that the programs that they were supplying had the feature that could conveniently help in migration or upgradation. Storage The bank currently using SAN technology, but they may have to consider NAS technology in the future. This calls for huge investment as various areas such as backup, disaster recovery need to be addressed. The bank has to store data according to the RBI guidelines for seven years, and as it is not necessary to store the data on the net-the bank uses tapes for off-line storage of data. The bank anticipates storage costs to decrease, and bulk purchases would be economical. Disaster Recovery setup The approach is that is needed to protect our data first as the basis for a business continuity plan. The disaster recovery site of the bank is located in Chennai. The data which is tored at the main site is also replicated in real-time online at the site in Chennai as well. Servers store the data at the site of DR and constant replenishment takes place. Incase of any disaster , the data is replicated and is available to use. Hence , both the bank and the customer have a feeling of security. BANK : HDFC BANK Vendor NCR: To provide Cheque Clearing solutions to cheque clearing operations department About NCR: (Refer figure 3) NCR is one of the prime leading vendor of payment and image processing solutions. The delivery of the cheque takes place to the specific branch or bank. Then the cheque is sent for payment if there are funds available and if the banker is convinced that it is genuine. In case if the cheques are left unpaid, they are returned to the present bank through another clearing which is known as Return Clearing. Signature Verification System (SVS): Refer Figure 6 The Signature Verification System further strengthens the entire process of verification by complete electrification of the whole process. By taking the image of the signature cards, the operators now can have direct access to the stored image of the cheque as well as signature card ,during the time of verifying cheques. The end result is that the entire process of cheque signature verification is carried out at a faster rate, also being more accurate as well as cost-effective compared to that of any other manual process. CONCLUSION: A management information system is a process which necessitates the manager with the information required to manage an organization efficiently and effectively. MIS is considered an essential component of effective and reasonable business decisions. The report concludes that Management Information System is par beneficial to the Banks for its transaction. We have seen the cheque Clearing Process and the involvement of IT for the same.IT contribution to banking Sector has really facilitated fast communication and real time networking. The Signature Verification System ensure the security and thus maintains the faith of the customer. Thus, the degree of customer satisfaction is enhanced. Comment on the HDFC Bank HDFC Bank has done exceptionally well considering its enthusiasm in MIS. Along with NCR it has received many award for preforming excellent. IT has been falicitated with the Multi-Channel Capability award for using the NCR APTRA eMarketing solution by NCR. IT facilitated the customers; communication via email, mobile services etc. It has also received the best ATM Installation and Management Solution award for HDFC Bank adapting to the NCR APTRA eMarketing solution to enhance customer service, reduce ATM transaction times and operating costs, and increase new revenue channels through its ATM network. Thus, establishing such IT infrastructure has reduced cost of paper for letters and faster access to the services available. It has also enhanced the customer experience. But, a lot more can be done on security which can again expand the applications for the customers and will built a sense of trust for the same. Acupuncture Essay -- essays research papers

Acupuncture A Chinese medical technique; acupuncture is a medicine originating in the orient over four-thousand years ago. Used primarily for pain relief, but also in curing disease and general health improvement. Oriental Medicine views (illness and pain) as an imbalance of one's energy. With Acupuncture the energetic balance can be restored, thus helping the body to rid itself of disease. Often illnesses can be diagnosed and treated at an early stage. Acupuncture consists of inserting hair thin needles through specific spots in the skin called acupuncture points. These specific spots of insertion are over neuroreceptors in underlying muscles. These needles are inserted along meridian points throughout the body; There are hundreds of these meridians, all serving different purposes. "Evidence proves that needling simulates peripheral nerves in the muscles which send messages to the brain to release endorphins (morphine- like peptides in the brain). These natural chemicals then block the sending of painful messages from the brain." (Acupuncture-Microsoft Network Nov. 30, 1996). Acupuncture needles are typically inserted 1/10 to 4/10 on an inch deep. Although some procedures require needles to be inserted as deep as 10 inches. Acupuncture points are then stimulated by various forms of needle stimulation. Acupuncture is an incredibly effective form of medicine; This essay will present details explaining some of the uses of acupuncture. Acupuncture; the insertion of needles into the body through specific spots, over neurorecepters. These needles are then stimulated by either: rotation, heat, or by a weak electrical current. Acupuncture is a medical technique used primarily as a relief of pain, but is known to cure disease, as well as improve general health. "The theory suggest that acupuncture blocks the transmission of pain impulses from parts of the body to the central nervous system." (Compton's interactive encyclopedia). Three main sites have been found for endorphin acupuncture analgesia. This type of acupuncture blocks the sending of pain messages from the brain. The pituitary gland being one; this gland, when stimulated by needles, releases endorphin. The second site are the periaquaductal gray neurons in the mid brain which release endorphins when stimulated. The third, el... ...les must be stimulated. The stimulation is what causes acupuncture to be so effective. There are several ways in which stimulation is reached: One being, a gentle twirling motion. The physician, by use of his/her fingers gently rotates the needles. Second, there is heat stimulation, the physician heats the needle with a cigar looking tool designed specifically for acupuncture. Third, electrical stimulation; the physician agitates the needles with a low powered 2 hz electrical current. The physician connects the needles to a low output electrical stimulation machine. Stimulation is key to the success of acupuncture. Acupuncture, a medical technique originating in the Orient, more than four-thousand years ago. Used primarily for reduction of pain, but to cure some disease, as well as improvement of general health. The most spectacular reason for acupuncture's success is: Stimulation of needles by the acupuncturist. Stimulation of the meridians; the rivers of energy throughout our bodies. These rivers get stopped up from time to time, acupuncture is the key to clearing the stop... Acupuncture a method of encouraging the body to promote natural healing and to improve bodily functions.
